From Australia to Italy – 12 hours Mugello coming up

Besaplast_Barcelona

Just two weeks after his debut in the Dunlop V8 Supercar Series Fredrik Lestrup is back in Europe for his second race of the season. This time he enters the 12-hour race at Mugello in Italy, driving the MINI John Cooper Works S Endurance for the Besaplast Racing Team.
“The difference between cars and events could hardlu be much bigger,” Fredrik says. “But I am looking forward to this event and I’m grateful Besaplast has asked me to drive for them again. If it were just up to me I would do a race every weekend so I’m happy for every opportunity I get to race.”

Fredrik Lestrup will team up with team owner Franjo Kovac and Martin Tschornia in the #44 MINI John Cooper Works S Endurance, a car which took the team to a dominant class victory and a fifth position overall in the Barcelona 24 hour race in September last year.
“We are entering this race with high targets and are definitely looking at another class victory. The car has been constantly improved by Besaplast Racing and David Dombek Motorsport and we know it is both fast and reliable in these endurance events, and the team are always strong with the strategy. This event is a little bit different with three hours on Friday followed by a parc fermé break before the remaining nine hours of the race the next day. Nevertheless I think we can be strong again and I’m looking forward to be back with Besaplast for another endurance event before heading back to Australia again.”

Fredrik Lestrup summarize first V8 Supercar weekend

2014_Clipsal500_ss1_6757_webb

Fredrik Lestrup’s first V8 Supercar weekend has been completed on the streets of Adelaide with the second race on Saturday. In the Saturday qualifying session Fredrik once again improved his performance and his laptime with another four tenths which put him 17th on the grid, three positions better from the first qualifying. Fredrik managed once again a great start and was up to 15th position after the first lap. An intense mid field battle followed over the next laps and Fredrik could hold his position until slipping two positions out of the final corner. Shortly afterwards he locked up a wheel under braking for the hairpin and flatspotted a tyre which caused vibrations. Late in the race on the penultimate lap he picked up debris from the race track, causing a puncture on the left rear that forced him to spin out. He could get going again and cross the finish line but with the final laptime 140 % slower than the race fastest lap he was not classfied.
“I’m not very happy with my performance in the second race,” Fredrik said. “I had a good first half of the race after another great start and I could show I can fight up in the midfield. Lap times were good enough for just outside top 10 so that is encouraging. Unfortunately I started to make too many small mistakes in the second half of the race after I locked up a wheel. That was all down to me, I lost a bit of concentration and in this series you can’t get away with that. Unfortunately I hit some debris late in the race which caused a puncture and a spin. I could get going again and cross the finish line but my final lap was too slow for us to be classified in the race. Not the way I wanted to end this weekend but it is all part of the steep learning curve.”

Overall Fredrik had a good first V8 Supercar weekend in the Dunlop series. Two good qualifying sessions, two good starts and a race finish in 15th position and on course for another race finish in the second race. With improvements step by step every session Fredrik feels it was an acceptable start to his V8 Supercar season.
“Overall I think I can leave Adelaide quite happy and proud over my debut here. These cars are very hard and physical to drive but we improved step by step each session. I could show I already have pace for the midfield and we found what we need to work on which is positive. I learned a lot this weekend that I can work on and apply for the coming weekends. All in all a good and very fun weekend. Highlights are the qualifying results and the first race fight and result. The downside are the mistakes I made in the second race but overall a good weekend. A big thanks to RSport, Pacific Hoists, Licht&Harmonie, Halda and everyone who’s made this possible. Bring on Winton!”

Up and down and up again for Fredrik at Adelaide

Adelaide_finish

An intense and exciting first race for Fredrik Lestrup in the Dunlop V8 Supercars series. Starting 20th Fredrik got a good getaway and after two laps he was already up to 15th position. A bit later he locked up a wheel in turn 4 and decided to be safe rather than sorry and went down the escape road. That cost him nine positions as he reentered 24th but he picked off position after position and ended back up in 15h position again after a late safety car gave him a chance to retake 15th with just a few laps to go.

“The race went better than expected and it was just so much fun,” Fredrik said afterwards. “It’s possible to race with these cars and it was just great. I made a costly mistake in turn 4 and locked up the brakes and chosed to go down the escape road and flip it around rather than risk hitting the wall. That cost me nine positions but the car was great and the pace was really good and consistent and I could get them back and the pace was good enough for top 10. I’m really happy with my first race here, we fulfilled all the targets we had for the first race.”

With the race premiere now done Fredrik looks forward to another day of qualifying and race tomorrow and everything that made this first start possible.

“This has been a goal of mine for so long and it is still a bit difficult to realize it’s real. There are so many to thank, especially Pacific Hoists, Licht & Harmonie, Halda and all the other partners who together with the RSport team made this possible. I’m already looking forward to more.”

Tomorrow the weekend continues with another qualifying session followed by another 40 min/27 lap race.

20th position in qualifying for first Adelaide race

2014_Clipsal500_ss1_2721_WEB

It was a solid qualifying session for Fredrik Lestrup as he tackled the Adelaide street circuit in qualifying trim for the first time. Going out in qualifying group 2 based on practice times yesterday Fredriks 1:23.6659 in qualifying was his best time so far this weekend and a one second improvement over his best lap time in practice. It was good enough for fifth position in the second qualifying group and ultimately led to a 20th start position for this evenings race.
“I would have liked to qualify a bit higher but at least we reached our target of qualifying within top 20,” Fredrik says. “I managed to use the tyres better at their peak and improved my personal best with a second. The time is not too far off 10th position which is encouraging. So far so good, now we’ll see what the race can bring. I’m sure it will be quite busy and the heat adds to the challenge. The main goal is to stay out of trouble and bring it to the finish line. If we can do that we should be able to get a decent position.”

Team mates Josh Hunter and Aaron Tebb ended up in 18th and 29th respectively. The race will start at 18:15 and is run over 40 minutes.

Top 20 in both practice sessions at Adelaide

1002374_762868450392320_147720908_n

Fredrik Lestrup finished in the top 20 in the 30 car strong field in both practice sessions at Adelaide as he completed his first day in the Dunlop V8 Series. With no drama and a solid day with lots of running, a total of 43 laps, he was happy with his first day.
“Although it’s true that more people were ahead than behind us on the time sheet I’m happy with the day,” he said. “We did just what we set out to do, to have a problem free day with a lot of running and getting experience of the track and the car. There are things to work on obviously. I need to understand how to get the most out of these tyres when they are new and there’s more work to be done. But a very good first day and an unbelievable experience to finally having driven my first official V8 session. A big thanks to the team.”

Tomorrow there’s qualifying at 11:00 followed by the first race, 40 min long, at 18:15.
