Comeback drive at Winton after difficult start

Winton_race

Fredrik Lestrup ended the Winton 400 Dunlop V8 Supercars weekend at Winton with a strong comeback drive to 16th position on Sunday after a difficult Saturday.

Saturday – qualifying and race 1:

Fredrik qualified the #44 Pacific Hoists Holden V8 Commodore in 22nd position for the first race. In the race he was fighting for 20th position when a brake problem and a loose wheel forced him into the pits for repairs. Although he could get back out on the track again the repairs put him back in 27th place, which in turn gave him a 27th start position for the second race.
“After having made progress in Adelaide we had a more difficult start to the weekend than we expected and was back at zero again. We had to play catch up and it took a while to get the car right and find a rhythm. We were ok for qualifying but far from where we wanted to be and I also struggled to find a gap in the traffic and get a good lap in. I made a good start in the race however and could gain a few positions right away and the car felt better. But then a wheel came loose that knocked out the brakes and I had to pit to fix it and that was that. We could get out again and finish the race but far from where we wanted to finish,” Fredrik says.

Sunday – race 2:

Starting from 27th Fredrik quickly made up places after a mega start and was up to 19th position already after the first lap. Continuing to climb and with competitive lap times he could gain more positions and was up to 16th position close to 15th when the chequered flag fell.
“Finishing 27th in the first race meant that’s where we had to start this race. I had a great start though and could gain eight positions on the first lap. The car worked great and finally we were where we should have started this weekend. It was an eventful race with a lot going on but I managed to climb to 16th position with lap times good enough for top 10. It was a good finish to a difficult weekend and I’m happy with this comeback drive and to show we do have a lot of pace in the car. With 25 guests on Saturday and 40 guests on Sunday it was also good to finish the weekend on a bit of a high. Thanks to the whole team and all the guests who gave us great support this weekend. Now it’s back to Europe for a VLN race at Nürburgring before going back again for the Perth 400,” Fredrik summarizes.

Lestrup at Winton – first practice day completed

10245380_618162141591624_697691367_n

This weekend it’s time for the second race weekend in the Dunlop V8 Supercar Series. The place is Winton outside Melbourne, a permanent race circuit where the #44 Pacific Hoists R-sport Race Engineering team did their pre-season test before the start of the season. After Adelaide Fredrik Lestrup looks forward to this weekend.
“I’m ready to go this weekend. My debut is over and done with and now we come to a track where I’ve been before although I’ve only driven it once but it’s the only track this year I at least have some experience of. The target is to qualify and race well within top 15 this weekend. We were there or there about at Adelaide and now I want to raise the bar. I’m pretty happy overall with the Adelaide weekend, we scored some points and I could finish 15th in the first race and was on course for a similar position in the second race before a puncture ended our day. Even so we were happy with that weekend as a start and now we want to continue forward. the main goal is to continue to finish the races and get the experience.”

The two practice rounds were held on Friday and it proved to be two tricky sessions with mixed weather, red flags and low overall grip in the track. Fredrik Lestrup hade 23st and 24th best time in the two practice sessions and explained there were some difficulties.
“It was a difficult first day with tricky conditions and mixed weather. We didn’t have the smoothest practice and ended up a bit too far off the pace. But there’s still cause for optimism, we have some things to change on the car and our fastest laps were aborted due to a red flag but it looked quite promising. I think we can find more pace tomorrow and still reach our targets for the weekend. I look forward to qualifying and race.”

Victory in Italy

Mugello_2

Fredrik Lestrup and Besaplast Racing added another Endurance trophy to the cabinet with a class victory in the A2 class with the Besaplast Racing MINI at the 12 hour race at Mugello in Italy. The weekend was not without drama though as the team encountered a misfire in the new engine shortly before the race and the team had perform something of a miracle in changing the engine just before qualifying. With just minutes to spare before the qualifying session was over the new engine was in the car and Fredrik could find time for a quick lap and put the car on the pole.

In the race, which started on Friday with three hours before parc fermé during the night ahead of the final nine hours the next day Fredrik together with team mates Franjo Kovac  and Martin Tschornia could control their lead in the class and advance to a 13th place overall in the standings.
“I always enjoy racing with Besaplast Racing and it was another great endurance race for us”, Fredrik says. “The team did a fantastic job in changing the engine and get us out before qualifying stopped which was an amazing work effort after we discovered a misfire in the new engine. The race was enjoyable, we could control our pace and didn’t have any real dramas during the race. It felt a bit different to park the car on Friday evening for the night and then go back to racing the next day after a good nights sleep. But it’s another experience. Big thanks to Besaplast Racing and the whole crew for letting me race with them again and it feels great to add another victory together with them. Now I’m looking forward to return to Australia for my third race weekend this year.”

Fredriks next race appearance is in Australia and the Winton Race Track for the second round in the Dunlop V8 Supercar Series 4-6 April.

From Australia to Italy – 12 hours Mugello coming up

Besaplast_Barcelona

Just two weeks after his debut in the Dunlop V8 Supercar Series Fredrik Lestrup is back in Europe for his second race of the season. This time he enters the 12-hour race at Mugello in Italy, driving the MINI John Cooper Works S Endurance for the Besaplast Racing Team.
“The difference between cars and events could hardlu be much bigger,” Fredrik says. “But I am looking forward to this event and I’m grateful Besaplast has asked me to drive for them again. If it were just up to me I would do a race every weekend so I’m happy for every opportunity I get to race.”

Fredrik Lestrup will team up with team owner Franjo Kovac and Martin Tschornia in the #44 MINI John Cooper Works S Endurance, a car which took the team to a dominant class victory and a fifth position overall in the Barcelona 24 hour race in September last year.
“We are entering this race with high targets and are definitely looking at another class victory. The car has been constantly improved by Besaplast Racing and David Dombek Motorsport and we know it is both fast and reliable in these endurance events, and the team are always strong with the strategy. This event is a little bit different with three hours on Friday followed by a parc fermé break before the remaining nine hours of the race the next day. Nevertheless I think we can be strong again and I’m looking forward to be back with Besaplast for another endurance event before heading back to Australia again.”
